# The hack

Accept the reality that none of us have a clue what our future holds in store for us. And that is OK. Balance future plans with bringing your focus and energy into living in the present moment.

Breathe; take one day at a time. You can always equip yourself to face whatever the future brings. Know that just because you feel anxious about the future, it doesn’t mean that your future is something to fear – that’s just the story you are telling yourself.

Stress can blinker us from noticing all the good things in life. We get so wrapped up in our head that we fail to notice the beauty of the simple things that surround us. We stop noticing the love and care that our loved ones wrap our days in. We stop noticing the taste of our food, the appearance of a blue sky or a smile on someone’s face. We stop noticing most things, other than the things that stress us out. In doing so, we forget how lucky we really are.

When we are stressed, things get out of perspective. A bad day probably isn’t a bad day; it’s more likely a single isolated event that you’ve ruminated over all day. You will have totally missed all the good things that happened because you have viewed them through the lens of that one isolated event. We focus on all that is wrong and miss all that is right.

When we are stressed, we take so many things for granted. We focus on all the things we haven’t got, and forget about the things we already have. We don’t appreciate how lucky we are simply to have a roof over our head, a bed to sleep in and food to eat.

Learning to be more present in each moment will help you to notice the good things that surround you. You will notice that even the most normal, random day is filled with things to be grateful for. You will realize the joy that can be found from the simple things in life – like hearing the birds sing, having a cup of tea, or enjoying the comfort of your bed. You will feel enriched by a beautiful moment spent with loved ones rather than taking them for granted. You will enjoy time spent putting your kids to bed, rather than your mind being on all the things you have to do. Everyday life becomes less going through the motions and more alive.

When you start to pay attention to these moments, you start to notice more and more of them. You start feeling grateful for so much in your life, and that in and of itself feels amazing. Have you ever noticed how good it feels to come home after you’ve been away? Or how good a glass of water tastes when you are extremely thirsty?

Practising an attitude of gratitude really is good for your stress levels, but you do need to be realistic about where you start. It’s not about faking it.
